In this article, we will take a look at players who may be highly owned or overpriced and who you can feel comfortable fading. Let’s go ahead and take a look at some options to ignore for Week 6.
QUARTERBACK
Alex Smith (KC): $7,500 vs. PIT
Alex Smith has put up some MVP caliber numbers through the first five weeks of the season, but I do not see him doing this for the entire year. To be fair, Smith has taken advantage of some pretty easy matchups early this season. Smith will face his first real test this week against the Steelers, who have allowed the third-fewest FanDuel points to opposing quarterbacks so far this season. I would much rather go up $300 and use Kirk Cousins, who has a juicy matchup against the struggling 49ers.
RUNNING BACK
Doug Martin (TB): $6,800 at ARI
Doug Martin had a solid 2017 debut last Thursday night against the Patriots with a touchdown and a total of 82 yards on 13 carries and one reception. Many people may now believe he is a solid value option for this week, but I’m avoiding him in a difficult matchup against the Cardinals. The Cardinals have allowed the fourth-fewest FanDuel points to opposing running backs this season and have allowed a meager 3.3 yards per carry.
Aaron Jones (GB): $6,800 at MIN
Aaron Jones is going to be another popular value play this week after having a great game against the Cowboys in Week 5. In that game, Jones had a touchdown and a total of 134 yards on 19 carries and one reception. Even if Ty Montgomery misses another game, I will be fading Jones this week. The Vikings have a pretty stout front seven, allowing the second-fewest FanDuel points to running backs this season.
WIDE RECEIVER
Michael Thomas (NOS): $8,500 vs. DET
This game between the Lions and the Saints will probably include a ton of fireworks, considering Vegas currently has the projected total sitting at 50. This probably means that Michael Thomas will be an extremely popular option, but I’m here to warn you not to use him in your GPP contests. Back in Week 12 of last season, Thomas disappointed many people (myself included) after he only had four receptions for 42 yards on five targets. Darius Slay shadowed him that game, and I don’t believe it was a fluke by any means. Slay will likely be shadowing him again this time around, and I’m going to learn my lesson by fading Thomas this time.
Mike Evans (TB): $8,100 at ARI
Mike Evans is another high profiled wide receiver who I am looking to fade this week. According to Pro Football Focus, Cardinals’ cornerback Patrick Peterson has shadowed one wide receiver from the opposing team in each of the five games so far this season. In those five games, opposing quarterbacks have only thrown his way nine times and have only completed five of those attempts for 66 yards and one touchdown.
TIGHT END
Jordan Reed (WAS): $6,500 vs. SF
Jordan Reed should be rested up nicely after the Redskins had their bye in Week 5. However, the 49ers have been surprisingly good at defending opposing tight ends, allowing the fewest FanDuel points. This has mostly been due to the play of free safety Jaquiski Tartt who has been one of the best safeties in the NFL through the first five weeks of the season.
